Berlin-Schöneweide Forced Labour Camp, Berlin, 28.09.2014
We go through Berlin. In the middle of the Schönweide district, almost nondescript, is a forced labour camp. We pass under a large, powerful gate to stand and find ourselves on a gravel path. The impression is one of orderliness and peace.
The memorial only encompasses a small part of the barracks. Opposite the entrance, at the other end of the property, a garage and some small businesses occupy the old forced-labourer barracks.
Around us are Berlin apartment blocks. Again I wonder, given the proximity of the homes, who could not have seen what was going on.
