The Siegfried Line near Aachen, 21.06.2014

These concrete pyramids, so well-ordered, are simply bizarre.

You can see them from the road, concrete lumps surrounded by fences and cows, and you‘d probably not give them a second thought if you didn‘t know what they were for.

I find it hard to grasp the size of the Siegfried Line. The praying woman and the stooping man look discomfited here, as they do everywhere, despite the lovely countryside.

Very slowly nature reclaims its territory and is repossessing these forgotten hulks. Concrete is (unfortunately) damnably hard.
